Crookes Valley Park, Crookesmoor.

Crookes Valley Park, Crookesmoor.

Considering the number of quality fish that come out of this water year on year, it surprised me to discover that it is totally free fishing. The water is jointly run and owned by the Council and also Sheffield University. The water covers just over 3 acres and provides plenty of places to fish from. It is very deep in places and fish tend to shoal up in the colder weather in these areas. The steps and pavilion areas seem to be the most popular.

It is strange to see the bivvy boys on the banks of a public park, but I discovered why when I found that the carp run up to 30lbs. The main attack for these fish is a variety of boilies, and big lumps of hair rigged luncheon meat fished towards the middle. There are plenty of quality silver fish also present, with loads of roach with the better ones approaching the 2lb mark. Perch are also present with large fish nearing 3lb taken during the colder weather on legered worm.

Bream shoals are present and better fish are up to around 3 lb, together with the odd occasional big chub (up to 6lb 2 oz). Take a variety of baits with you, but bottom fishing maggot / caster and corn will get you bites at most times.

Day Tickets - Free, no Keepnets allowed, Park byelaws apply.

Directions - If you navigate your way to the centre of Sheffield and then take the A57 Manchester Road. You will see signs for the university and after the hospital take the third road off the roundabout, which is Bolsover Street. Follow this road until you come to Winter Street and then onto Crookes Valley road and you will see the park.
