Aston Ponds, Sheffield. There are actually 5 ponds at this location, which is fairly easy to find if you know where they are. There is good parking adjacent to the stable and split pond. Most of the pegs are suitable for anglers with disabilities. The waters have plenty of bank side features to target, and with the water holding some good colour when the water is running through. These can be good times to fish. As previously stated there are 5 ponds, The first two ponds have now been bought by the guy who owns K.J.S at Killamarsh (previously Laycocks) he has put new platforms on all the existing pegs and signs obviously now advertising what is called K.J.S Aston Ponds. The reason behind this is apparently the guy who owns K.J.S had a section of the Chesterfield canal which he used as a pond, British Waterways have apparently reclaimed this part of the canal back as they are rejuvenating the whole canal and beginning restoration over the next year, they compensated him by buying the Laycocks lakes at Aston Ponds. The other 4 lakes are still run by Aston Farm Fisheries. The third pond down is known as the Stable Pond, which has 26 pegs and is stocked heavily with carp to just short of 30lb. The pond is rectangular in shape, with good access to all sides. The water in places is quite deep up to 15ft. It has been stocked with plenty of pastie sized fish as well. Tench are present that go over 6lb, bream and chub feature to 4lb with roach and perch to just over 2lb. The next pond down is known as the Split Pond, it has a branch of water that curls around to the side of the road. The pond holds 60 pegs, which can be close together. This water does have some very big carp to over 30lb, but the main stock of carp are less than 3lb in weight. This water also holds some very good stocks of silver fish, with roach and perch averaging 4oz making up good nets, and also lots and lots of gudgeon. This water is a firm favourite with the locals due to the very good stock of tench that it holds. They respond well to the normal tench baits but also prawns and cockles account for some good fish. It is this pond that the majority of the matches take place on The final pond is known as the Lily Pond, the reason through the warmer months is apparent. There are just short of 40 pegs on here, again, which when full are a little close together. The carp go to 35lb, with good stocks of bream and tench to a little over 6lb. There are small stocks of chub that tend to hang around close to the lily pads. There are also some very nice roach present to 2lb 4oz I would recommend a 9 - 10m pole fished about 4ft and surprisingly enough you will pick up tench and bream which, although not all that big, provide decent sport. The wind does tend to whip up a bit, so put a bit of weight on float wise, but keep the end tackle fairly light as the water does tend to get quite clear. Warmer weather is a good time to fish. Day tickets are £5.00 and an extra £2 for every other rod, concessions at £3.00. Fishing dawn until dusk. Season tickets, which run the calendar year for £40.00 (Please pay before fishing from John, the on site bailiff). Barbless hooks only, fishing from dawn until dusk. Keepnets allowed only on Lily Pond. Groundbait only via the pole cup or feeder. No boilies. Nut baits to be fed sensibly Directions - Leave the M1 at Junction 31 and head towards Sheffield. From the motorway take the first road on the left signed towards Killamarsh. After a very short distance there is on the left a tarmacced track that leads to the water.
